PERF COLLOQUIUM SERIES – “Between Afro-orientalism and Afro-pessimism” – Dr. Suk-Young Kim

Abstract This talk provides a critical analysis of the performance of blackness in the Korean pop music (K-pop) industry. Close reading of the racial relations expressed in K-pop music videos—the most commonly used media platform to circulate K-pop globally—shows that race relations in the industry may not always hark back to the deeply troubled paradigms of racial tension in the United States.
